Custom travel to the West Indies
The West Indies are the Caribbean's iconic archipelago — a volcanic arc of over 7,000 islands between Florida and Venezuela. This guide brings together the islands I offer as custom travel, each with its own character: Saint Lucia's UNESCO Pitons, Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival, the French creoleness of Guadeloupe and Martinique, the exclusivity of Saint Barthélemy, the wild nature of Dominica, the beaches of Antigua and Barbuda. I design every itinerary as a single destination or multi-island combo via Caribbean Airlines and LIAT, around crystalline beaches, Creole gastronomy, and UNESCO heritage.
Highlights
- Saint Lucia: UNESCO 2004 Pitons (Gros + Petit Piton) + Sulphur Springs (world's only drive-in volcano) + Jade Mountain
- Trinidad and Tobago: Carnival + steel pan + Caroni scarlet ibis + 1776 Main Ridge Forest (Americas' oldest reserve)
- French Guadeloupe and Martinique: La Soufrière and Mount Pelée volcanoes, Creole beaches, AOC agricultural rum
- Saint-Martin and Saint Barthélemy: French-Dutch island and hyper-exclusive jewel of yachts and celebrities
- Dominica the 'Nature Island': Boiling Lake, 365 rivers, Kalinago people + Antigua and Barbuda and its 365 beaches
Frequently asked questions
When to visit the West Indies?
DECEMBER-MAY optimal: dry season, 25-30 °C, sea 26-28 °C, little rain, trade winds. JANUARY-MARCH: absolute best period + Trinidad Carnival mid-February or early March. APRIL-MAY: gentle prices and still perfect climate. JUNE-NOVEMBER: hurricane season to avoid, except Trinidad-Tobago, located further south and out of the hurricane zone.
How long should I plan?
7 NIGHTS minimum for a single island. 10-14 NIGHTS for a 2-island combo (for example Saint Lucia + Martinique, or Guadeloupe + Les Saintes). 18 NIGHTS for a 3-island combo or a fuller exploration of the Lesser Antilles via inter-island flights.
Visa and passport for the West Indies?
Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Martin, and Saint Barthélemy are French: an ID card or passport is enough for French citizens. On the independent islands (Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda), NO VISA for a stay < 90 days, passport valid 6 months after return. ESTA required only when transiting through the USA.
How to travel between islands?
INTER-ISLAND FLIGHTS are the norm. Caribbean Airlines and LIAT (based in Antigua) connect the Lesser Antilles: Saint Lucia, Antigua, Trinidad, etc. Air Caraïbes and Air France serve Guadeloupe and Martinique from Pointe-à-Pitre and Fort-de-France. Ferries between some neighbouring islands (Guadeloupe-Les Saintes, Saint-Martin-Saint Barthélemy, Trinidad-Tobago). Confirm LIAT 24 h in advance, frequent delays.
Are the West Indies safe?
YES globally. The French islands, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Antigua, and Dominica are very safe in tourist areas. Caution in Port-of-Spain (Trinidad) in the evening in some districts. Avoid displaying jewelry and expensive electronics. Left-hand driving on British-heritage islands, right-hand on the French islands.
