Essential Uruguay: Montevideo, Colonia, Punta del Este
Duration : 8 days
Route : Montevideo (3 nights) → Colonia del Sacramento UNESCO (1 night) → Punta del Este / Casapueblo (3 nights) → return flight Montevideo
Uruguay (176,215 km², 3.4 million inhabitants, independent since 1828) is nicknamed 'the Switzerland of South America' for its stability, and ranks among the world's most progressive countries. It is home to two UNESCO sites: Colonia del Sacramento (1995), a former colonial town founded in 1680 that changed hands seven times between Portugal and Spain, and Fray Bentos (2015), birthplace of the 'OXO' meat extract. Montevideo, the capital, unfolds its Ciudad Vieja, its Mercado del Puerto and its 22-km Rambla, and hosts the world's longest Carnival (40 days, the candombe Las Llamadas parade UNESCO-listed in 2009). Punta del Este, the 'South American Saint-Tropez', charms with the Irarrázabal Mano and Casapueblo, the work of painter Carlos Páez Vilaró. Inland, gaucho estancias perpetuate pastoral life around the asado and Tannat, now the national grape. Allow about ten days, private or combined with neighboring Argentina (Buenos Aires 1 h by ferry from Colonia).

Uruguay can be visited from October to April (the tourist year corresponds to austral summer). December-March (high summer season): 25-30 °C in Montevideo, Punta del Este in full swing, Carnival at its peak mid-February (Las Llamadas late January-early February, UNESCO 2009). October-November and April: milder temperatures, prices halved, March Tannat harvest. Avoid June-August (austral winter, 10-14 °C, much rain, deserted beaches, but cultural Montevideo remains pleasant and winter Tannat ideal). Montevideo Carnival lasts 40 days late January to mid-March — the absolutely unique window to see Las Llamadas is late January-early February.
Uruguay is one of South America's safest countries (top 35 Global Peace Index, nicknamed « Switzerland of South America »). Customary tipping: 10% in restaurants, $1-2 per bag at hotels. Tap water drinkable in Montevideo and all cities. Decent English in tourism, but Rioplatense Spanish (Argentine accent) opens all doors. Climate: bring light clothes in summer and a sweater for coastal evenings (winds). Adapter not needed (European Type C/F outlets, 220 V). For Carnival: hotel and Tablados booking 3 months ahead, Las Llamadas seated grandstand booked 6 months ahead.
