Tajikistan is one of Central Asia's most extreme and preserved destinations — mountain country (93% of territory above 1,000 m, 50% above 3,000 m), 143,000 km² (a quarter of France) for 10 million inhabitants. Independent since 1991 (former Soviet Union, 1992-1997 civil war), Central Asia's poorest country but most authentic, Persian heritage (Tajik people = Persian speakers = ethnically and culturally distinct from other Turkish peoples of Central Asia). 90% Sunni Muslim (10% Ismaili in Pamir, Shia branch with Aga Khan as living imam). Pamir ('Roof of the World' according to Marco Polo, plateau with average altitude 4,000 m, peaks at 7,495 m — Peak Ismoil Somoni former Peak Communism, Peak Lenin 7,134 m) — one of the world's highest mountain ranges. Pamir Highway (M41, 1,252 km built by Soviets 1931-1934, one of the world's mythical roads, crosses 4,655-m passes, lunar landscapes, Kyrgyz/Tajik yurts). Wakhan Valley (Afghan border, view on Hindu Kush, ancient Buddhist and Silk Road forts). Iskanderkul Lake ('Alexander the Great's Lake', Fan Mountains, turquoise water). Dushanbe (capital, 800,000 inhabitants, Soviet heritage). Persian-Tajik cuisine (osh plov, qurutob). 14-21 days for the true Pamir experience (reserved for demanding adventurers).
