Essential Sweden: Stockholm and Gotland
Duration : 8 days
Route : Stockholm (4 nights) → ferry or flight to Gotland (3 nights, UNESCO Visby) → Stockholm (1 night)
Sweden is the largest Scandinavian country (450,000 km², larger than France) and one of Europe's most contrasted — 10.5 million inhabitants stretched over 1,600 km from north to south, from the Baltic Sea to the Arctic Circle. A neutral country since 1814 (world record of continuous peace), constitutional monarchy, emblematic social democracy (world's 3rd happiest country). Fifteen UNESCO sites tell its story: the Hanseatic town of Visby on Gotland, the royal palace of Drottningholm, the Viking sites of Birka, the Tanum rock carvings, Sami Lapland. To the south, Stockholm the « Venice of the North » is built on 14 islands. To the north, Swedish Lapland offers 70,000 lakes, infinite birch forests, the Sami people and their reindeer — and from September to March, the dance of the northern lights above Abisko and the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi (the world's oldest ice hotel, since 1989). 7-14 days for an unforgettable summer or winter trip.

Sweden is visited in two great seasons. Summer (June to August) offers extremely long days (midnight sun in Lapland from May to July), mild temperatures (20-25 °C in Stockholm, 15-20 °C in Lapland), possible Baltic swimming (16-20 °C in July), flamboyant nature. Ideal season for Stockholm, the archipelago, Gotland, and the west coast. Winter (December to March) offers polar magic: guaranteed snow in Lapland, northern lights in Abisko, ICEHOTEL open, Christmas markets (Drottningholm, Skansen). Ideal season for Lapland. Avoid April (melting, mud) and November (grey and polar night started but ICEHOTEL not yet rebuilt). September-October offer the first auroras and beautiful autumn landscapes in Lapland.
In Sweden, ID card suffices for Europeans (EU country since 1995 and Schengen). Currency is Swedish krona (SEK, €1 ≈ 11 SEK) — Sweden refused the euro in 2003. Cards accepted everywhere, it's one of the world's most cashless countries — even food trucks and public toilets refuse cash. Optional tipping (10% sometimes in gourmet restaurants). Excellent tap water everywhere. Excellent mobile network (Telia, Telenor, Tre — eSIM recommended). European emergency number: 112. Among the world's safest. In Lapland: cold weather equipment essential (suits provided by the ICEHOTEL and tour operators), frostbite risk at -30 °C. Right-hand driving, watch out for reindeer on the roads.
It depends on your project. For Stockholm, the archipelago, and Gotland: June to August (luminous summer, midnight sun). For Lapland, the ICEHOTEL, and the northern lights: December to March. September-October offer the first auroras and beautiful autumn landscapes in Lapland.
Minimum 8 days for Stockholm + Gotland or Stockholm + Lapland. 11-12 days to combine south and north. 14 days for a complete summer or winter trip.
As a guideline, €3,800-4,500 per person for 8 days in comfort (excluding flights). Premium (Treehotel + ICEHOTEL Art Suite + Ett Hem): €5,500-7,500. Paris-Stockholm flights: €250-500. Sweden is expensive but the quality-experience ratio is exceptional.
No for Europeans (EU country since 1995 and Schengen). For Europeans, ID card sufficient. No visa for British, Americans, and Canadians (≤ 90 days).
The ICEHOTEL is rebuilt each autumn (October-November) with 30,000 tons of Torne River ice. It opens in December and melts each April. Each room is sculpted by a different artist. The interior temperature is -5 °C to -8 °C — you sleep in a thermal sleeping bag on reindeer skins. The warm zone (changing rooms, bathrooms, restaurant) is at 20 °C. Since 2016, ICEHOTEL 365 offers a permanent section accessible year-round.
No absolute guarantee but conditions in Abisko are among the world's best (dry microclimate, often clear sky). Over 4 nights in Abisko in winter, chances are 75 to 90%. The Aurora Sky Station offers an « aurora guarantee » — if you don't see them in 3 nights, you're invited the following year.
SJ high-speed train for the south (Stockholm-Gothenburg 3 h, Stockholm-Malmö 4 h 30). SAS domestic flight for Lapland (Stockholm-Kiruna 1 h 30). Ferries to Gotland (4 h). In Stockholm: Tunnelbana (one of the world's most beautiful metros, each station is a work of art). Car in Lapland or the archipelago.
Yes, it's one of Europe's most expensive countries. Meal at a decent Stockholm restaurant: €30-50 per person. 4★ hotel in Stockholm: €200-350/night. Standard room at the ICEHOTEL: €400-600; Art Suite: €1,200-2,500. Coffee: €4-5. Beer: €8-12. Sweden is cashless — almost no business accepts cash.

Absolutely. Excellent safety, family infrastructure everywhere, Astrid Lindgren amusement park in Vimmerby (for Pippi Longstocking fans), Junibacken in Stockholm, Skansen, summer-suitable archipelago.
