Custom travel to Sweden

Sweden is the largest Scandinavian country, 450,000 km², larger than France, and one of Europe's most contrasted, 10.5 million inhabitants stretched over 1,600 km, from the Baltic to the Arctic Circle. A neutral country since 1814, constitutional monarchy and emblematic social democracy. Fifteen UNESCO sites tell its story: Visby on Gotland, Drottningholm palace, the Viking sites of Birka, the Tanum rock carvings. To the south, Stockholm, the « Venice of the North », is built on 14 islands. To the north, Swedish Lapland offers 70,000 lakes, infinite birch forests, the Sami people and their reindeer, and from September to March the dance of the northern lights above Abisko and the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, the world's oldest ice hotel. 7-14 days for an unforgettable summer or winter trip.

When to go

Sweden is visited in two great seasons. Summer (June to August) offers extremely long days (midnight sun in Lapland from May to July), mild temperatures (20-25 °C in Stockholm, 15-20 °C in Lapland), possible Baltic swimming (16-20 °C in July), flamboyant nature. Ideal season for Stockholm, the archipelago, Gotland, and the west coast. Winter (December to March) offers polar magic: guaranteed snow in Lapland, northern lights in Abisko, ICEHOTEL open, Christmas markets (Drottningholm, Skansen). Ideal season for Lapland. Avoid April (melting, mud) and November (grey and polar night started but ICEHOTEL not yet rebuilt). September-October offer the first auroras and beautiful autumn landscapes in Lapland.

In Lapland: cold weather equipment essential (suits provided by the ICEHOTEL and tour operators), frostbite risk at -30 °C. Right-hand driving, watch out for reindeer on the roads.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for a Sweden trip?

It depends on your project, since Sweden lives in two very different modes. For Stockholm, the archipelago, Gotland, and the west coast: June to August, summer offers extremely long days, a midnight sun in Lapland from May to July, mild temperatures (20-25 °C in Stockholm, 15-20 °C further north), and possible Baltic Sea swimming (16-20 °C in July). For Lapland, the ICEHOTEL, and the northern lights: December to March, snow is guaranteed and the cold can drop to -15/-25 °C. September-October already offer the first auroras and beautiful autumn landscapes in Lapland, a period favored by photographers. Avoid April (melting, mud, ICEHOTEL closed) and November (grey skies, polar night begun but ICEHOTEL not yet rebuilt).

How long for a Sweden trip?

Plan at least 8 days for Stockholm and Gotland (4 nights in Stockholm, 3 in Visby), the ideal itinerary for a first summer trip. For the most chosen itinerary, Summer Sweden, Stockholm Archipelago by kayak or sailboat then west coast to Gothenburg and Bohuslän, allow 12 days. For winter, the Lapland and ICEHOTEL experience (Stockholm, Kiruna, Abisko, Jukkasjärvi, Sami camp) fits into 9 days. To combine south and north in one trip, 11-12 days are needed, and 14 days allow a complete stay, summer or winter, without rushing the pace.

What budget for a custom Sweden trip?

As a guideline, expect from €3,800 per person for 8-10 days in Comfort (4★ boutique hotels like Hotel Diplomat or At Six in Stockholm, guesthouses in Visby, standard Cold Room at the ICEHOTEL). The Premium level starts at €5,500 for 10-12 days, with Ett Hem or Grand Hôtel in Stockholm, a night at Treehotel in Harads, an Art Suite signed by an international artist at the ICEHOTEL, private dog sledding, and a starred dinner at Frantzén (3★ Michelin). The Exclusive level, from €9,500 for 12-16 fully bespoke days, adds suites at Grand Hôtel or Ett Hem, private helicopter over the archipelago or Lapland, a Deluxe Suite at the ICEHOTEL, and dinners at Frantzén and Aira. Expect €250-500 per person for a direct Paris-Stockholm round-trip flight (2 h 30, Air France, SAS), with higher fares in high ICEHOTEL season (December-March). Sweden is expensive but the quality-experience ratio is exceptional.

Do I need a visa for Sweden?

No visa is required for European Union citizens, Sweden has been an EU member since 1995 and is part of the Schengen area: an ID card or valid passport is enough. British, American, and Canadian citizens also don't need a visa for a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period, a valid passport suffices. No particular health formalities are required. The European emergency number (112) works as in France.

How does the ICEHOTEL work?

The ICEHOTEL is rebuilt each autumn (October-November) with 30,000 tons of Torne River ice. It opens in December and melts each April. Each room is sculpted by a different artist. The interior temperature is -5 °C to -8 °C, you sleep in a thermal sleeping bag on reindeer skins. The warm zone (changing rooms, bathrooms, restaurant) is at 20 °C. Since 2016, ICEHOTEL 365 offers a permanent section accessible year-round.

Will we see the northern lights?

No absolute guarantee, auroras depend on solar activity and weather, but conditions in Abisko are among the world's best thanks to a particularly dry microclimate and often clear skies, one of the rare places where the auroral oval is visible even during moderate solar activity. Over 4 nights in Abisko between December and March, the chances of spotting the auroras are estimated at 75-90%. The season actually runs from late August to mid-April, with the first auroras appearing as early as September during the partial polar night. The Aurora Sky Station, atop Mount Nuolja (1,169 m, accessible by cable car), offers an « aurora guarantee »: if you don't see them in 3 nights, you're invited back the following year.

How do I get around in Sweden?

For the south, the SJ high-speed train links Stockholm to Gothenburg in 3 h and to Malmö in 4 h 30, comfortable and punctual. For Lapland, the SAS domestic flight (Stockholm-Kiruna, 1 h 30, 4 flights a day) is the most practical option; the Stockholm-Narvik night train, nicknamed the polar train, is more legendary but takes 17 h. Ferries reach Gotland from Nynäshamn (4 h) or Oskarshamn. In Stockholm, the Tunnelbana, one of the world's most beautiful metros where each station is a work of art, complements buses, trams, and public ferries (SL network). A rental car is useful in the archipelago or in Lapland, with winter equipment provided in Kiruna for a December-March departure; right-hand driving, no tolls, but watch out for reindeer on northern roads.

What should I pack for Lapland and the ICEHOTEL?

Essential cold-weather gear (thermal suit, boots, mittens) is provided by the ICEHOTEL and by local tour operators, so there's no need to invest in polar equipment before you leave. Do bring your own warm layers to wear under the suit (wool sweater, thermal underwear), sturdy closed shoes for wintertime Stockholm, and a type C/F adapter (the same as France, so actually unnecessary for French travelers). At the ICEHOTEL, you sleep in a thermal sleeping bag on reindeer skins at -5/-8 °C; frostbite risk mainly arises during prolonged time outdoors at -30 °C, which is why it's important to follow your guides' instructions.

Which region should I choose for a first trip to Sweden?

For a first trip, the Essential Sweden itinerary (Stockholm and Gotland, 8 days) is best suited: Stockholm across its 14 islands for the must-sees (Gamla Stan, Vasa Museum, royal palace), then Gotland Island and its UNESCO-listed medieval town of Visby. If you're traveling in summer and have more time, the Summer Sweden itinerary (12 days, the most chosen) adds the Stockholm Archipelago by kayak and the west coast up to Gothenburg. For a spectacular first winter experience without piling on stops, the Lapland and ICEHOTEL itinerary (9 days) concentrates Stockholm, Kiruna, Abisko, and Jukkasjärvi.

Is Sweden expensive?

Yes, it's one of Europe's most expensive countries. Meal at a decent Stockholm restaurant: €30-50 per person. 4★ hotel in Stockholm: €200-350/night. Standard room at the ICEHOTEL: €400-600; Art Suite: €1,200-2,500. Coffee: €4-5. Beer: €8-12. Sweden is cashless, almost no business accepts cash.

Can you combine Sweden with other countries?

Yes: Sweden + Norway (Oslo in 3 h by train, or Narvik by night train), + Denmark (Copenhagen 30 min from Malmö via the Øresund Bridge), + Finland (Helsinki by night ferry from Stockholm), + Estonia (Tallinn by night ferry).

Is Sweden suitable for a family trip?

Absolutely. Excellent safety, family infrastructure everywhere, Astrid Lindgren amusement park in Vimmerby (for Pippi Longstocking fans), Junibacken in Stockholm, Skansen, summer-suitable archipelago. In Lapland: ICEHOTEL night fascinating for children 8+ (with preparation), dog sledding, reindeer encounters.
