Duration : 8 days

Slovakia is one of Central Europe's most discreet and authentic destinations — a 49,035 km² country for 5.4 million inhabitants, independent since 1993 (« Velvet Divorce » with Czechia), in the EU since 2004 and the eurozone since 2009. Eight UNESCO sites tell its story: Spiš Castle and its ensemble (1993), the mining town of Banská Štiavnica (1993), the wooden village of Vlkolínec (1993), the Slovak Karst caves (2000), the primeval beech forests of the Carpathians, the Slovak Carpathian wooden churches (2008), the historic center of Bardejov (2000), and the Limes Romanus frontiers. To the north, the High Tatras peak at Gerlachovský štít (2,655 m), the entire Carpathian chain's highest point. To the south, the Danube connects Bratislava to Vienna (70 km — the closest capital pair in the world after Cairo-Jerusalem). 7-10 days to discover this generous small country at the crossroads of Vienna, Krakow, and Budapest.

Slovakia is ideally visited from May to October. May-June and September-October offer the best conditions (mildness, clear skies, flowering meadows or flamboyant colors, low crowds). Summer (July-August) is hot in Bratislava (28-32 °C) but pleasant at altitude in the Tatras — it's the ideal season for hiking and ascents (Gerlachovský štít open June-September). Winter (December-March) is cold (-5 to 5 °C in lowlands, -10 to -20 °C in the Tatras) but magical for Bratislava under snow, Christmas markets, and skiing in Štrbské Pleso, Tatranská Lomnica, Jasná. April and November are greyer.
In Slovakia, ID card suffices for Europeans (EU country since 2004 and Schengen since 2007). Currency is euro since 2009. Cards accepted everywhere, contactless reigns. Tipping: 10% in restaurants. Excellent tap water everywhere. Excellent mobile network (Orange, O2, Telekom — eSIM recommended). European emergency number: 112. Among Europe's best security. Mandatory highway vignette (€10/week or €15/month). Right-hand driving. Sometimes narrow mountain roads. A few useful Slovak phrases: « ďakujem » (thank you), « dobrý deň » (hello), « prosím » (please).
May-June and September-October offer the best conditions (mildness, clear skies, low crowds). July-August for Tatras hikes and ascents (Gerlachovský štít accessible June-September). December-March for skiing in Štrbské Pleso or Jasná. December for Bratislava at Christmas.
Minimum 8 days for Bratislava + Tatras + Spiš. 11 days to add Banská Štiavnica, Bardejov, and the caves. 14 days to combine with Vienna, Budapest, or Krakow.
As a guideline, €1,890-2,300 per person for 8 days in comfort (excluding flights). Premium (Kempinski Tatras + Marrol's + Gerlachovský ascent): €2,800-3,800. Paris-Bratislava flights: €150-400.
No for Europeans (EU country since 2004 and Schengen since 2007). For Europeans, ID card sufficient. No visa for British, Americans, and Canadians (≤ 90 days).
It depends on your goal. Vienna offers more direct flights (daily Air France) and more luxury; Bratislava is 1 h further east, more authentic, and 30% cheaper. Ideally: arrive in Vienna, descend the Danube by hydrofoil (1 h 45) to Bratislava, then explore Slovakia. The two capitals are 70 km apart — the closest pair in the world after Cairo-Jerusalem.
