Custom travel to Paraguay

Paraguay (406,752 km², 6.8 million inhabitants, independent from Spain since 1811) is one of South America's most authentic destinations — one of the continent's least touristic countries. Its most iconic UNESCO site remains the Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue Jesuit missions (1993), heritage of the 30 « reductions » founded from 1609 by the Jesuits to protect the Guaraní from Brazilian slavers. This autonomous utopian system — schools, workshops, hospitals, agriculture — was dissolved in 1767 and inspired Roland Joffé's film « The Mission » (1986 Palme d'Or). Asunción (525,000 inhabitants), founded in 1537, is one of South America's oldest capitals. The Chaco Boreal covers 60% of the territory (250,000 km² of semi-arid wilderness, jaguars, giant armadillos, tapirs) where the Filadelfia Mennonites live (Germano-Russian community settled in 1927). Guaraní is a co-official language: Paraguay is the world's only country where the majority (90%) speaks an indigenous language. Allow seven to twelve days to combine UNESCO missions, colonial Asunción, and the Mennonite experience — a destination designed bespoke, off the beaten path.

When to go

Paraguay is best visited from May to September: it's the dry season, the climate is mild (18-26 °C), little rain, perfect conditions for the Jesuit missions, the Chaco, and Asunción. October-April correspond to the hot and humid season (30-42 °C, heavy rain) — discouraged for the Chaco (45 °C). The Encarnación Carnival takes place in February (Paraguay's most important), Holy Week (March-April) sees traditional processions, and the Feast of the Holy Virgin of Caacupé (December 8) is the major national pilgrimage. For the Chaco jaguars, September-October offer the best observations.

  • Dry season (May – September) — UNESCO missions, Asunción, accessible Chaco
  • Wet season (October – April) — Encarnación Carnival (February)
  • Jaguar peak (September – October) — Defensores del Chaco: jaguars and tapirs
  • Pilgrimages (December (Caacupé) and March-April (Easter)) — Caacupé pilgrimage (December 8)

Practical information

Paraguay is generally safe, calmer and quieter than its neighbors. No mandatory vaccinations, but yellow fever vaccine is recommended for the Chaco, and malaria prophylaxis on medical advice for humid zones. Tap water is drinkable in Asunción, to be avoided in the Chaco. The climate is extreme in summer (October-April, 30-42 °C) — favor the dry season (May-September, 18-26 °C). No visa for Europeans up to 90 days. Guaraní and Spanish coexist in daily life. ATMs are reliable in Asunción and Encarnación but rare in the Chaco — plan USD cash for remote areas. For Ciudad del Este and the triple border, usual vigilance.
