Custom travel to Panama
Panama (75,417 km², 4.5 million inhabitants, independent from Colombia since 1903) is the bridge between the two Americas and one of Latin America's most complete destinations: you cross the isthmus in a few hours, from Pacific to Caribbean. The Panama Canal (82 km, inaugurated in 1914, expanded in 2016 for Neopanamax) sees 14,000 ships per year, nearly 10% of world maritime trade. Five UNESCO sites tell the country's story: Panama Viejo and Casco Viejo (1997 and 2003), Darién National Park (1981, 5,800 km² of jungle on the Colombian border), Talamanca-La Amistad (1983, transnational with Costa Rica), Portobelo and San Lorenzo fortifications (1980), and Coiba National Park (2005). To the north, San Blas unfolds 370 Kuna Yala islands — an indigenous people autonomous since 1925, one of America's only. To the northwest, Bocas del Toro lines up 9 Caribbean islands. To the west, Boquete, at 1,200 m, produces one of the world's finest Geisha coffees, under Volcán Barú (3,475 m). Allow ten to fourteen days to combine Canal, Casco Viejo, San Blas and Bocas — a destination designed bespoke, between colonial boutique hotels and Kuna cabins on stilts.

When to go
Panama is best visited from December to April: it's the dry season, the sky is blue, the sea calm at San Blas and Bocas, and Volcán Barú lets itself be climbed without clouds at the summit. From May to November, it's the rainy season — daily tropical late-afternoon downpours (1-2 h), but often sunny mornings and 30-40% reduced rates. September-October see humpback whales off Coiba and Isla Iguana (breeding season). For San Blas, the sea is rougher from June to August (winds). National Carnival in February (Las Tablas, the country's most iconic), Panama Jazz Festival in January.
- Dry season (December – April) — Canal, San Blas, Bocas, clear Volcán Barú
- Humpback whales (July – October) — Coiba and Isla Iguana: whales + manta rays
- Rainy season (May – June and September – November) — Bocas and Boquete remain pleasant
- Carnival and festivals (January – February) — Las Tablas Carnival, Panama Jazz Festival
Practical information
Panama is generally safe in tourist zones. In Panama City, be cautious at night in some districts (El Chorrillo, Curundú); in Casco Viejo and tourist districts, safety is good. No mandatory vaccinations, but yellow fever vaccine is recommended if visiting Darién, and malaria prophylaxis on medical advice for the jungle. Tap water is drinkable in Panama City and urban zones, to be avoided in San Blas and the jungle. The currency is the balboa, at parity with the US dollar which circulates everywhere (bring small bills for San Blas and tipping). No visa for Europeans up to 180 days (one of America's most generous agreements). For San Blas: mandatory Kuna authorization, access only with their operators, strict respect for community rules. For the Canal and locks, advance booking is strongly recommended in high season.
