Custom travel to Montenegro
Montenegro (Crna Gora, « Black Mountain », 13,812 km², 620,000 inhabitants, independent since 2006) is one of Europe's most stunning destinations. Across half a Belgium stretch 293 km of Adriatic coast, 5 national parks, 48 peaks above 2,000 m, and Europe's deepest canyon (Tara, 1,333 m). The world's first ecological state per its 1991 constitution, the country counts two major UNESCO sites: the Bay of Kotor (1979, a 28-km glacial ria fringed with Venetian villages) and Durmitor (1980, a 39,000-hectare national park with 18 glacial lakes). Sveti Stefan, a pink-roofed islet, is run by Aman, one of the world's most prestigious palaces. Inland, Ostrog Monastery (1665) remains embedded in a 900-m cliff, and Mount Lovćen shelters the mausoleum of the prince-poet Njegoš sculpted by Meštrović. Allow seven to twelve days to combine Venetian coast, wild mountains, and Orthodox heritage — a destination designed bespoke, from the Aman palace to Durmitor's traditional cabins.

When to go
Montenegro is best visited from May to October. May-June and September-October are our preferred period: water at 22-25 °C, beaches still uncrowded, perfect temperatures to combine coast and Durmitor hikes. July-August are saturated in Kotor (1.5 million cruise passengers/year for 25,000 inhabitants), with doubled prices; prefer Durmitor (cool, 18-25 °C) and Tara rafting then. Winter (December-March) stays quiet and affordable on the coast but rainy (Kotor receives 4,600 mm/year, among Europe's wettest); inland, you can ski at Žabljak (Durmitor, 5 lifts, 9 km of slopes) and Kolašin.
- Ideal spring (May – June) — Quiet Kotor, Aman Sveti Stefan, Durmitor hikes
- Tourist peak (July – August) — Prefer Durmitor (18-25 °C) and Tara rafting
- Autumn (September – October) — Lovćen and Durmitor colors, Plantaže harvests
- Winter/ski (December – March) — Ski Žabljak Durmitor + Kolašin Bjelasica
Practical information
Montenegro is very safe (top 30 Global Peace Index, homicide rate among Europe's lowest). No mandatory vaccinations; drinkable tap water, modern private hospital in Tivat. The European health insurance card is accepted, but travel insurance with repatriation remains recommended for mountain areas. No visa for Europeans (stay ≤ 90 days, ID card accepted) — Montenegro is not Schengen but applies a bilateral agreement. The euro was unilaterally adopted in 2002 (unique non-EU case), Visa/Mastercard accepted everywhere on the coast. For driving: winding coastal roads (caution on the Kotor cornice at 50 km/h and the Lovćen climb on 25 switchbacks), 4×4 recommended in Durmitor in winter. International license recommended, no tolls. Water shoes useful (sea urchins).
