Custom travel to Malta
Malta, the EU's smallest state (316 km², 542,000 inhabitants), condenses 7,000 years of continuous history across three islands bathed in 300 sunny days and holds three major UNESCO sites. Valletta (UNESCO 1980), Europe's smallest capital, was built in five years (1566-1571) by the Knights of Saint John after the 1565 Ottoman Great Siege; its Saint John's Co-Cathedral houses Caravaggio's « Beheading of Saint John the Baptist » (1608), the painter's only signed work. The megalithic temples (5500-2500 BC), predating the pyramids, and the underground Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum with its 110 Hz Oracle Chamber form a world-unique prehistoric heritage. Mdina, the silent city of medieval-Arab charm, served as King's Landing in Game of Thrones; Comino offers its Blue Lagoon, and Gozo combines Ġgantija, the Cittadella and Ramla Bay's red sand. Cuisine blending Arab, Sicilian and English influences (pastizzi, fenkata, Marsovin wines, ġbejna), Maltese-English bilingualism, deep Catholicism and left-hand driving. A Hollywood favorite, Malta pairs beautifully with Sicily, Italy or Tunisia on a 10 to 14-day loop.

When to go
Malta has a Mediterranean climate, with 35-40 °C summers swept by the African sirocco and mild 15-18 °C winters. The best periods are April-May and September-October (22-28 °C, sea 19-25 °C, golden light and moderate crowds). September coincides with the Marsovin and Delicata harvests. May-June open the high season, ideal for swimming and the patronal festas with their spectacular fireworks. July-August are best avoided except for the beaches of Comino and Gozo. From November to March, the mild and dry winter offers a mystical Mdina and a baroque Valletta free of crowds. At the equinoxes of March 21 and September 23, at 6:12 AM, the first ray crosses Mnajdra's main altar — an exclusive experience limited to four people on reservation. February's Carnival and the May-September patronal festas punctuate the year.
- Spring — golden light (April – May) — Mnajdra equinox, Mdina golden light, spring festas
- Summer — Comino Blue Lagoon (June – August) — Blue Lagoon, patronal festas, night fireworks
- Autumn — harvests and equinox (September – October) — Marsovin harvests, Mnajdra equinox, golden light
- Winter — UNESCO heritage (November – March) — Carnival, silent Mdina, off-season baroque Valletta
Practical information
Malta is one of the world's safest countries. No visa for French citizens (EU and Schengen): an ID card suffices, and the EHIC gives access to the health system, including the modern Mater Dei hospital. Tap water is drinkable but hard — bottled water is preferred. Sun protection is indispensable (300 sunny days a year). Bank cards accepted everywhere, ATMs are plentiful; a 10% tip in restaurants is appreciated. 4G/5G coverage is excellent (GO Malta, Melita, Epic, or Holafly eSIM). Left-hand driving (Malta and Cyprus are the only Schengen countries concerned), narrow roads and hurried drivers, extra vigilance on Gozo. Type G British plugs: adapter required. The Hypogeum is booked six months ahead (80 visitors/day, €35/person); the after-hours private visit with Dr Pace, at €250/person, is booked twelve months ahead. Comino's Blue Lagoon is best enjoyed by private sailboat in the morning (before the ferries, return before 4 PM). At 10 PM, Mdina becomes truly silent. From May to September, every village celebrates its patron saint with spectacular fireworks. Malta is one of Europe's most LGBTQ+-friendly countries (same-sex marriage legal since 2017).
