Lesotho is a small mountainous kingdom of 30,355 km² and 2.3 million inhabitants, 13-15 h of flight from Paris via Johannesburg. It is the world's only country entirely located above 1,000 m of altitude, with Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482 m, southern Africa's highest summit south of Kilimanjaro) as its highest peak. Nicknamed 'Kingdom in the Sky', it is encircled by South Africa and perched above the Drakensberg. Independent since 1966, it is a stable constitutional monarchy led by King Letsie III. Basotho culture remains very much alive: a Sotho people whose kingdom was founded in 1820 by Moshoeshoe I, sesotho language, multicolored Seanamarena blankets worn daily, mokorotlo straw hats, and Basotho ponies essential to altitude life. Flagship sites include the Maletsunyane Falls (192 m, one of Africa's highest single-drop falls and home of the world's highest commercial abseiling), Sani Pass (mythical 2,876-m pass on 8 km of 4×4 track), Thaba-Bosiu (cradle of the Basotho nation) and the southern Drakensberg with its 4,000-year-old San rock paintings. Plan for 5-7 days as a South Africa complement, or 8-10 days to explore the country in depth. A destination for lovers of mountains, authentic culture and photography.
