Custom travel to Laos

Laos is one of Southeast Asia's most authentic destinations, peaceful and lightly touristed, where Theravada Buddhism reigns supreme. 7.5 million inhabitants, the region's only landlocked country, with no access to the sea, bordered by Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Myanmar. This lesser-known fifth player of the Indochinese peninsula has kept a rural way of life and a deliberate slowness, worlds away from the bustle of neighboring Thailand or Vietnam. Luang Prabang (UNESCO 1995, former royal capital) is Asia's most enchanting city: 33 wats in a preserved French colonial setting between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, monks' morning alms at 5:30 am, Mount Phousi and the turquoise Kuang Si waterfalls. Vientiane, a peaceful capital, holds the golden That Luang stupa. The Plain of Jars (UNESCO 2019), the Mekong's 4000 Islands with their Irrawaddy dolphins, and the karst landscapes of Vang Vieng round out the itinerary. Fresh cuisine, laap and sticky rice: a timeless interlude, perfect for 10-14 days.

When to go

November-February is the best period (cool dry season, 20-28 °C, low humidity). March-May very hot (35-40 °C). June-October rainy season (monsoon, but spectacular green landscapes). March and April often coincide with the agricultural slash-and-burn season in the north, which can veil the sky in smoky haze and reduce visibility; if landscape photography is a priority, favor December-February instead. The less-crowded rainy season, in exchange, offers vividly green rice paddies and waterfalls at their fullest flow.

  • Cool dry season (November – February), All sites, festivals (Bun That Luang November)
  • Hot dry season (March – May), Pii Mai (Lao New Year mid-April, water festivities)
  • Rainy season (early) (June – August), Flooded rice paddies, swollen Mekong, spectacular Khone Phapheng
  • Rainy season (late) (September – October), Boun Ok Phansa (end of Buddhist Lent, pirogue races)

Practical information

One of Asia's safest countries. Visa on arrival for French citizens ($40, 30 days, ID photo required). Cards accepted in upscale hotels and restaurants in Luang Prabang/Vientiane, elsewhere payment in kips or USD. Avoid tap water (bottled water). Covering attire in wats (shoulders and knees). UXO (unexploded Vietnam War bombs) is a real risk off-trail: never leave marked zones in certain provinces. Mobile network coverage (Unitel, ETL) is good in Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Vang Vieng, more limited in remote provinces like Xieng Khouang or the far south. It isn't strictly required to remove shoes before entering someone's home, but it's standard practice in temples and often appreciated on private visits.

Pack a basic first-aid kit and avoid tap water, including for brushing your teeth.

What should I pack?

Light, breathable clothing for the humid heat, modest attire (shoulders and knees covered) for wats and the morning alms, easy-to-remove sandals for temple visits, and a light layer for cool dry-season evenings (November-February), especially in the mountainous north.
