Custom travel to Iceland
A 103,000 km² volcanic island on the edge of the Arctic, home to 380,000 people, Iceland is known as the 'land of ice and fire'. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge literally crosses its soil, separating the Eurasian and North American plates by 2 cm a year, and feeds 130 active volcanoes along with glaciers covering 11% of the surface. Three UNESCO sites bear witness: Þingvellir (2004), site of the Alþingi, the world's oldest parliament (930-1798); Surtsey (2008), an island born of an undersea eruption in 1963; and Vatnajökull (2019), Europe's largest glacier. Reykjavik, the world's northernmost capital founded in 874 by the Viking Ingólfur Arnarson, holds two-thirds of the country. The Golden Circle gathers Þingvellir, the Strokkur geyser and Gullfoss waterfall; the south coast lines up Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara black beach and the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon; the Westfjords remain the wildest region. Northern lights show from September to March, the Blue Lagoon offers its turquoise waters at 38-40 °C, and a cuisine of skyr and lamb accompanies a summer of midnight sun. A timeless parenthesis, still largely preserved.

When to go
Iceland can be visited year-round with two very different seasons. SUMMER (June-August, tourist high season): MIDNIGHT SUN (the sun doesn't set from May 20 to July 24 in Reykjavik, long days up to 22 h in June), 10-15 °C on average, frequent but brief rains, all roads open (including interior F-roads for 4×4), Laugavegur hiking (the mythical 55-km trail Landmannalaugar-Þórsmörk), salmon fishing, whale watching in Húsavík (95% chance May-October), puffins at Látrabjarg (June-August). WINTER (September-March, aurora season): 0-5 °C average (but feels -10 with wind), very long nights (18 h in December), 200+ northern lights nights/year, winter ICEHOTEL and ice cave exploration (October-March only), difficult driving conditions (4×4 mandatory, check vedur.is road conditions). MAY and SEPTEMBER: excellent intermediate periods (fewer crowds, reasonable prices, medium-long days 16-18 h in May and 12-14 h in September, still acceptable weather). Festivals: Reykjavik Pride (August), Iceland Airwaves (November music), Þorrablót (Viking festival January-February, skyr-salmon-dried meat tastings), New Year's Eve (December 31, one of the world's most impressive fireworks — each Icelandic family fires its own, total illumination of Reykjavik sky at midnight).
- Summer (midnight sun) (June – August) — Laugavegur, Húsavík whales, Látrabjarg puffins
- Autumn (September – October) — First auroras month, reasonable prices
- Winter (auroras) (November – February) — 200 aurora nights/year, ice caves, NYE Reykjavik
- Spring (March – May) — March last auroras, May puffins return
Practical information
Iceland is one of the world's safest countries (#1 Global Peace Index since 2008, virtually no crime). No visa for French citizens (Schengen since 2001), French ID card sufficient. No mandatory vaccines, up-to-date DTP recommended. Tap water drinkable everywhere (exceptional quality, naturally filtered glacier water). Credit card ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE (contactless payment everywhere, Iceland is one of the world's most cashless countries — some gas stations don't even take cash, plan a chip-and-PIN credit card). Customary tip: no, already included in the price (10% automatic service charge). Excellent mobile coverage (Síminn, Vodafone Iceland, Nova, Holafly eSIM), 4G/5G everywhere except in the heart of the wild fjords. Specific NATURAL RISKS: WIND (frequent at 80-120 km/h in autumn-winter, can violently slam car doors and knock down pedestrians — rental companies give you a 'wind warning' to sign), SNOW STORMS (check vedur.is daily road conditions), VOLCANOES (130 active, last Reykjanes eruption 2024, follow vedur.is — if eruption, follow authority instructions), SNEAKER WAVES on Reynisfjara (5 tourist deaths 2007-2024, IMPERATIVE RESPECT FOR SAFETY MARKINGS, NEVER turn your back to the sea). Driving: 4×4 MANDATORY in winter, GRAVEL + ASH INSURANCE essential. Dress code: layering (3-layer technique: merino thermal underwear + fleece + waterproof windbreaker + hat + gloves), even in summer. Sunscreen and polarized sunglasses necessary (high UV at altitude and glacial reflections).
Frequently asked questions

June-August for midnight sun (long days up to 22 h, all roads open, hiking). September-March for northern lights (200+ nights/year, peak intensity 2024-2026). May and September offer a good compromise (fewer crowds, reasonable prices, still acceptable weather).
How long for an Iceland trip?
Minimum 5-7 days for Golden Circle + south coast + Vatnajökull + Blue Lagoon. 8-10 days to add Snæfellsnes Peninsula or Mývatn-Akureyri-whales. 12-14 days for the complete island tour by ring road.
What budget for a custom Iceland trip?
As a guideline, €2,800-€3,500 per person for 7 days in comfort, excluding flights. Premium (Reykjavik Edition + Hotel Rangá Aurora Cabin + photographer): €4,200-€5,500. Excellence (The Retreat Blue Lagoon + ÓX 2★ + volcano helicopter): €7,500+. Direct Paris-Reykjavik flights: €250-€600.
