Custom travel to Guatemala
Guatemala (108,889 km², 17.4 million inhabitants) is the cradle of Maya civilization: sixty percent of the population is indigenous and thirty Maya languages are still spoken. Tikal, the largest classical-period Maya city in the Petén jungle, is crowned by Temple IV (70 m), the tallest standing pre-Columbian pyramid; Antigua, the former UNESCO colonial capital, remains frozen by the 1773 earthquake. Lake Atitlán, called « the world's most beautiful lake » by Aldous Huxley, is ringed by three volcanoes and twelve Maya villages, including Fuego, in permanent eruption since 2002 and observable from Acatenango. At the table: pepián, kak'ik, tamales and Antigua coffee. Allow twelve to sixteen days to combine the three regions, with a possible extension into Belize and Mexico.

When to go
Guatemala is ideally visited from November to April (dry season, 18-28 °C depending on altitude). Avoid June-October, the tropical rainy season with daily afternoon showers. December-January is the tourist peak (book 4-6 months ahead, highest prices); February-April offers an excellent compromise, perfect climate and smaller crowds. The Chichicastenango market only runs Thursdays and Sundays, plan accordingly. Festivals: Antigua's Semana Santa (Holy Week, one of Latin America's most beautiful Catholic processions, colorful flower carpets in the streets), Día de los Muertos (November 1-2, traditional kites in Sumpango), and the Fuego eruption, visible from Acatenango year-round since 2002.
- Winter (dry season) (December – February), Tikal Temple IV sunrise, Antigua, Día de los Muertos
- Spring (March – May), Antigua Semana Santa, Acatenango
- Summer (rainy season) (June – August), Cobán July festival, reduced prices
- Autumn (rains) (September – November), Día de los Muertos Sumpango kites
Practical information
Guatemala is very safe in its tourist zones (Antigua, Atitlán, Tikal, Chichi). Guatemala City should be treated as transit only, with a private driver recommended. No visa is required for French citizens (under 90 days, CA-4 agreement). The biometric passport must remain valid 6 months after return. No vaccines are mandatory; up-to-date DTP and hepatitis A are recommended, along with mosquito repellent and, in the Petén jungle, antimalarials. Tap water is not drinkable. Credit cards are widely accepted in Antigua and major cities, with cash (GTQ or USD) still useful in rural areas. Customary tip: 10-15% in restaurants. Mobile coverage is decent in cities, weaker in the Petén. Covering attire is required in churches.
