Custom travel to Georgia

Georgia (Sakartvelo, 69,700 km², 3.7 million inhabitants) is a small Caucasian country of spectacular landscapes, long occupied by the Russians (1801-1991) and independent since April 9, 1991. At the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Muslim world, it is one of the world's oldest Christian nations — the second after Armenia, converted by Saint Nino in 326 AD. Its heritage spans four UNESCO sites: Mtskheta (1994), ancient capital and cradle of Georgian Christianity; the Bagrati and Gelati monasteries; Upper Svaneti (1996) and its 200 medieval 9th-12th-c. Koshki stone towers; and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Tbilisi (« warm place » in Georgian, 1.1 million inhabitants), founded in 458 by King Vakhtang Gorgasali over its sulfurous thermal springs, keeps one of the Caucasus's most authentic old towns. To the north, Mount Kazbek (5,047 m) and Gergeti Monastery (14th c., perched at 2,170 m) are the country's emblematic image. Kakheti is the cradle of world wine: qvevri jars dating back to 6000 BC have been found there, making Georgia the oldest known wine-producing country — 525 autochthonous grape varieties, a world record, and the buried-jar fermentation listed UNESCO 2013. At the table, the supra (feast) is led by a tamada who pronounces around twenty toasts in five hours. A still off-the-radar destination, reachable in 4h30 from Paris via Istanbul.
