Georgia (Sakartvelo, 69,700 km², 3.7 million inhabitants) is a small Caucasian country of spectacular landscapes, long occupied by the Russians (1801-1991) and independent since April 9, 1991. At the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Muslim world, it is one of the world's oldest Christian nations — the second after Armenia, converted by Saint Nino in 326 AD. Kakheti is the cradle of world wine: qvevri jars dating back to 6000 BC have been found there, making Georgia the oldest known wine-producing country — 525 autochthonous grape varieties, a world record, and the buried-jar fermentation listed UNESCO 2013.
