French Guiana (83,846 km², 300,000 inhabitants), in northeastern South America between Brazil to the south and east and Suriname to the west, is one of the French Republic's most singular territories: an overseas department, an EU member, but also an Amazonian land 96% covered in forest — one of the world's last great virgin forests, 7h30 from Paris by direct flight. It is here, in Kourou, that the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) stands — Europe's only space base since 1964, from which Ariane 6, Vega-C and Soyuz rockets lift off (about twelve launches a year, one of the world's most striking industrial spectacles). Cayenne, the Creole capital of 70,000, is the gateway, with its cultural mosaic market and colonial heritage. 11 km off Kourou, the Salvation Islands hold the ruins of the penal colony (1852-1953) that sealed the fate of Alfred Dreyfus and Henri Charrière, the « Papillon ». The Maroni river, the 520 km natural border with Suriname, is the territory of the Bushinengue Maroons — one of the purest African-rooted cultures outside the continent. Further south, the Guiana Amazonian Park (33,900 km², created 2007) is the EU's largest protected area: jaguars, harpy eagles, 700 birds. On the western coast, leatherback turtles nest from April to July. Allow ten to fourteen days, ideally aligned with an Ariane launch calendar.

French Guiana can be visited almost year-round depending on your goal. The main dry season runs from August to November — the most comfortable period, passable jungle, navigable rivers, often clear skies. A small dry season in March (« little March summer ») also allows trips. The rainy season (December-July) doesn't prevent everything: downpours are intense but short, vegetation dazzling. For leatherback turtle nesting, come between April and July (Awala-Yalimapo beach, at night). To attend an Ariane launch, the CNES calendar dictates, regardless of seasons. For Saül and deep jungle, favor September-November. Stable temperatures year-round (25-32 °C, 80-90% humidity).
French Guiana is generally safe in tourist zones (Cayenne, Kourou, Salvation Islands, Saül). Increased vigilance in Cayenne at night (downtown after 10 pm) and on the Suriname-side Maroni (illegal gold mining). No visa for French citizens (EU territory), ID card sufficient for flight from mainland. Strongly recommended vaccines: DTP, hepatitis A and B, yellow fever (mandatory and required on entry), typhoid, rabies in forest areas. Anti-malarial recommended for inner Maroni and Saül (ask your doctor, doxycycline or Malarone). DEET 30-50% mosquito repellent essential. Tap water drinkable on coast (Cayenne, Kourou), filtered at Saül and on the Maroni. French mobile plans valid (Orange Caraïbe, SFR, Free Caraïbe). Euro everywhere, card payment widespread on the coast, cash needed at Saül and on the Maroni.
