French Guiana (83,846 km², 300,000 inhabitants), between Brazil and Suriname, is an overseas department covered 96% in virgin Amazonian forest, 7h30 from Paris. Kourou hosts the Guiana Space Centre, Europe's only space base since 1964, launching Ariane 6, Vega-C and Soyuz. Cayenne, the Creole capital, is the gateway. Offshore, the Salvation Islands hold the ruins of the penal colony (1852-1953) where Alfred Dreyfus and Henri Charrière, the « Papillon », were held. The Maroni river is the territory of the Bushinengue Maroons, among the purest African-rooted cultures outside the continent. French Guiana can be visited almost year-round depending on your goal. The main dry season runs from August to November, the most comfortable period, passable jungle, navigable rivers, often clear skies. A small dry season in March (« little March summer ») also allows trips. The rainy season (December-July) doesn't prevent everything: downpours are intense but short, vegetation dazzling. For leatherback turtle nesting, come between April and July (Awala-Yalimapo beach, at night). To attend an Ariane launch, the CNES calendar dictates, regardless of seasons. For Saül and deep jungle, favor September-November. Stable temperatures year-round (25-32 °C, 80-90% humidity).
French Guiana is generally safe in tourist zones (Cayenne, Kourou, Salvation Islands, Saül). Increased vigilance in Cayenne at night and on the Suriname-side Maroni (illegal gold mining). No visa for French citizens (EU territory), ID card sufficient from mainland France. Strongly recommended vaccines: DTP, hepatitis A and B, yellow fever (mandatory on entry), typhoid, rabies in forest areas. Anti-malarial recommended for inner Maroni and Saül. DEET mosquito repellent essential. Tap water drinkable on the coast, filtered at Saül and on the Maroni. French mobile plans valid. Euro everywhere, cards widespread on the coast, cash needed at Saül and on the Maroni.
