Custom travel to Fiji

Fiji is the warmest archipelago in the South Pacific, 333 islands scattered across 1.3 million km² of ocean, populated by 900,000 inhabitants with Melanesian and Indo-Fijian culture, famous for their 'bula spirit' ('bula' = hello, joy of living). Diving among the world's best (preserved coral reefs, bull sharks, manatees), private islands with villas on stilts, white sand lined with coconut trees as far as the eye can see, kava (ritual drink), meke ceremony (polyphonic chants). Secondary destination after Bora Bora for honeymoons (30-40% cheaper), with a cultural dimension unique in Polynesia-Melanesia. The welcome ceremony in a Fijian village (sevusevu, kava offering to the chief) is one of the Pacific's most powerful anthropological experiences.

When to go

Fiji can be visited year-round but offers two distinct seasons. Dry season (May-October, austral winter): perfect season, ideal climate (24-28 °C), little rain, clear sky, clear water for diving (30 m+ visibility), refreshing trade wind. Wet season (November-April, austral summer): hotter (28-32 °C), frequent rain, 80% humidity, sometimes cyclones (rare but possible January-March). Hotels are 30-40% cheaper in wet season. For humpback whales (rare in Fiji): July-October. For Beqa diving: May-November.

  • Dry season (high) (May – October), Yasawas, Mamanucas, Beqa diving
  • Wet season (November – April), Tighter budget honeymoon
  • Transition May and October (May and October), All archipelagos, accessible prices
  • Cyclonic rains (January – March), Off-season, lowest prices

Practical information

Fiji is very safe. No visa for French citizens for 4 months. Cards accepted in resort hotels. Tap water drinkable in Nadi/Denarau, avoid on remote islands. Tipping not mandatory (but appreciated). Modest dress in villages (sulu/skirt for women and men), covered shoulders. Don't touch Fijians' heads (sacred). Cyclones rare but possible January-March.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time?

May to October (dry season, austral winter) is the ideal period: perfect climate (24-28 °C), little rain, clear sky, clear water for diving (30 m+ visibility), refreshing trade wind that tempers the tropical heat. November to April (wet season, austral summer) is hotter and heavier (28-32 °C, around 80% humidity), with frequent late-day rain and a rare but possible cyclone risk between January and March. It's also the low season, when hotels are 30-40% cheaper, a good trade-off if you don't mind occasional showers. For diving at Beqa Lagoon, aim for May to November (best visibility). To spot humpback whales, rare but present in Fiji, the window is July-October.

How long?

Allow 10 days for a classic honeymoon combining the Mamanucas (3 nights, near Nadi) and the Yasawas (5 nights, more remote, with the overwater bungalows of the Likuliku Lagoon Resort), the most chosen itinerary. For a diving-focused trip, pairing Beqa Lagoon shark diving (4 nights at Pacific Harbour) with Vanua Levu's Rainbow Reef (5 nights at Savusavu), plan 12 days. For an exclusive private island escape (COMO Laucala, Turtle Island, or Vatulele), 10 days is enough, with 8 nights on the island itself, all-inclusive. Under 8-9 days, with 22 to 26 h of flying from Europe, the journey becomes disproportionate to the time on the ground, I recommend a minimum of 10 days.

What budget?

Three levels, excluding international flights, for 2 people sharing a double room: Comfort from €3,200/person for 10-12 days (9-11 nights in family eco-resorts in the Mamanucas like Mana or Tokoriki, boutique hotels in Nadi/Denarau, seaplane or inter-island catamaran, 3-4 experiences included such as diving, sevusevu, or snorkeling); Premium honeymoon from €6,200/person for 10-14 days (9-13 nights in exceptional hotels, overwater bungalow at the Likuliku Lagoon Resort, Beqa Lagoon diving, private beach dinner, private seaplane); Exclusive private island from €12,000/person for 10-14 days (COMO Laucala and its 25 villas, Turtle Island and its 14 villas, or Vatulele and its 12 villas, all-inclusive, helicopter, starred chefs). Expect €1,500 to €2,200 per person for a round-trip Paris-Nadi flight in Economy (with stopover, via Auckland, Hong Kong, or Los Angeles).

Do I need a visa?

No visa is needed for EU, UK, US, and Canadian nationals for a tourist stay under 4 months: you receive a free entry permit directly at Nadi airport. The only requirement is a passport valid at least 6 months after your return date, plus a return or onward ticket. No vaccine is mandatory to enter Fiji, but up-to-date universal vaccines (DTP, hepatitis) remain recommended as for any tropical destination.

How to get between islands?

Fiji is mostly explored by air and sea. The seaplane (Pacific Island Air) offers spectacular 15-50 min transfers between Nadi and the Mamanucas or the Yasawas, flying over turquoise lagoons. The Yasawa Flyer catamaran links Nadi to the Yasawas in 4-5 h, with several stops possible depending on your resort. For the more distant Vanua Levu and Taveuni, Fiji Airways or Pacific Sun domestic flights are essential. On Viti Levu, the main island, a rental car lets you reach the Coral Coast or Suva on roads that are in good condition but winding (left-hand drive); local buses exist but remain slow. Private boats are a comfortable option for groups or families wanting to avoid connections.

Bora Bora or Fiji for honeymoon?

Bora Bora for iconic overwater bungalows (but 30-40% more expensive). Fiji for cultural dimension (sevusevu, kava), world-class diving (Beqa), and better value.

Sevusevu: how does it work?

Buy 1 kg of kava root at the market (FJ$10-20). Offering to the chief (turaga ni koro) who accepts with 'bula vinaka'. Kava ceremony with hand clapping, meke chants. Possible lovo meal.

Beqa diving: required level?

Open Water+ with 30-dive minimum recommended. Depth 18-30 m, moderate currents. Beqa Adventure Divers is the reference operator.

Is Fiji suitable for family?

Absolutely, Fiji ranks among the best family destinations in the Pacific. The country is very safe, the welcome for children is warm (bula spirit), and the Mamanucas concentrate several family resorts with kids' clubs, such as Mana Island or Castaway Island (where Tom Hanks filmed 'Cast Away'), protected beaches, and easy snorkeling right from shore. From age 4, children enjoy the shallow, calm lagoons. Cultural activities like the sevusevu and village visits suit the whole family, with modest dress recommended (covered shoulders, sulu or skirt). Save Beqa Lagoon diving and Taveuni hikes for teens and adults: Open Water+ level required for the sharks, more demanding terrain for the Bouma waterfalls.

Tips?

Not mandatory. 5-10% appreciated for exceptional service.

How to pay in Fiji?

The local currency is the Fijian dollar (FJD, about 2.40 to 1 EUR). Bank cards are widely accepted in resort hotels, tourist restaurants, and most shops in Nadi, Denarau, and Suva. On more remote islands (Yasawas, Vanua Levu, private islands), bring cash for small expenses, local markets, and tips, not mandatory but appreciated (5-10% for exceptional service). ATMs are mostly found in Nadi, Suva, and major hotels, withdraw what you need before heading to the islands.

What should I pack for Fiji?

Bring a Type I plug adapter (240 V), different from the European format. Pack light, breathable clothing for the tropical heat (24-32 °C depending on season), a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a hat. For visits to Fijian villages and the sevusevu ceremony, modest dress is required: a sulu (local wrap, easy to find on site) or a skirt/trousers covering the knees, and covered shoulders, for men and women alike. If you plan to dive at Beqa Lagoon or the Rainbow Reef, your dive logbook and certifications are enough, gear is provided by local dive centers. Also bring a light windbreaker for boat or seaplane crossings, sometimes cool despite the surrounding heat.
