Custom travel to Ethiopia
Ethiopia is one of Africa's most extraordinary destinations — country of 1,104,300 km² (double France) for 120 million inhabitants, 7-9 h of direct flight or with stopover from Paris. It's one of the ONLY African countries to have NEVER been colonized (victorious resistance to Italian invasion 1935-1941 under Emperor Haile Selassie, brief Italian occupation without annexation; defeated in 1896 at Adwa by Menelik II — one of the only major African victories against a European power in 19th century). Ethiopia is the HUMANITY CRADLE — Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis, 3.2 million years, discovered 1974 in Hadar by French team of Yves Coppens and Donald Johanson, one of the world's most famous human fossils, exhibited at Addis Ababa National Museum), coffee birthplace (arabica variety native to Kaffa region, exported to world via Yemen in 15th century), unique ETHIOPIAN orthodox Christian heritage (Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, one of Christianity's oldest — 4th century, separated from Rome and Constantinople since 451 at Chalcedon Council, own Julian calendar offset by 7-8 years — 2026 Gregorian = 2018-2019 Ethiopian, 13 months including 12 of 30 days and 1 of 5-6 days, unique Amharic script — Ge'ez alphabet of 250 characters). 9 UNESCO SITES, sub-Saharan Africa record. Flagship sites: LALIBELA (UNESCO 1978, 11 12th-13th-century monolithic churches cut from single block of mountain basaltic rock, one of the world's architectural wonders — comparable to Petra), AKSUM (UNESCO 1980, ancient Aksumite kingdom 1st-7th century controlling Red Sea trade, granite obelisk stelae up to 33 m high, Queen of Sheba palace), GONDAR (UNESCO 1979, 'Africa's Camelot', 17 17th-century Fasilides royal castles), HARAR (UNESCO 2006, fortified Muslim holy city, Islam's 4th holy city after Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, 99 mosques, nighttime hyena dance), SIMIEN MOUNTAINS (UNESCO 1978, 4,533 m, unique tropical alpine landscapes, gelada — endemic lion-maned monkey, 7,000 individuals), DANAKIL DEPRESSION (one of the world's hottest, lowest and most hostile places — -120 m below sea level, 50 °C, Erta Ale lava lake, Dallol sulphurous formations, sodium-sulphur colored valleys), OMO VALLEY (UNESCO 1980, 8 preserved indigenous tribes — Mursi with lip plates, Hamer with ocher hairstyles and bull jumping ceremony, Karo with body paintings, Suri, Banna, Dassanech, Nyangatom, Konso). UNIQUE cuisine (injera — fermented teff flatbread, eaten by hand with wat — spicy sauces, one of the world's most distinctive cuisines). 14-21 days to combine historic north, tribal south, and nature. A FUNDAMENTAL destination for those interested in humanity history, cultural diversity and African conservation.
