Custom travel to Ethiopia
Ethiopia, a country of 1,104,300 km² with 120 million inhabitants, 7-9 h flight from Paris, is one of the only African countries never colonized, having defeated the Italians at Adwa in 1896. It is humanity's cradle, Lucy was discovered here in 1974, and the birthplace of arabica coffee. Its orthodox Christian heritage is unique worldwide: a Julian calendar offset by 7-8 years, Amharic script and the Ge'ez alphabet. The country holds 9 UNESCO sites, a sub-Saharan Africa record: Lalibela's monolithic churches, Aksum's stelae, Gondar's castles, the holy city of Harar, the Simien Mountains with their endemic gelada, the Danakil Depression with its lava lake, and the Omo Valley with its preserved tribes. Allow 14 to 21 days to combine historic north, tribal south and nature.
Highlights
- UNESCO Lalibela (11 12th-century monolithic churches)
- Aksum (Aksumite kingdom, 33-m stelae)
- Simien Mountains and endemic gelada
- Danakil Depression (Erta Ale, Dallol)
- Omo Valley (8 tribes, Mursi, Hamer)
- Arabica coffee (world origin)

October-March is the best period (dry season, pleasant temperatures 18-28 °C in altitude). NOVEMBER-FEBRUARY: tourist peak (festivals MESKEL September 27, GENNA Christmas January 7, TIMKAT epiphany January 19, all world cultural tops). OMO VALLEY: SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER (dry season, practicable tracks; Hamer bull jumping ceremonies March-October). DANAKIL: NOVEMBER-FEBRUARY (temperatures 'bearable' 35-45 °C; in summer dangerous 50-60 °C). Avoid June-September (kremt rainy season, muddy trails, Simien fog).
- Cool dry season (ideal) (October – February), Lalibela Genna (January 7), Timkat (January 19)
- Hot dry season (March – May), Hamer bull jumping, practicable Simien
- Short rains (not recommended) (June – September), Lush Simien landscapes (but fog)
- Inter-season (Meskel festival) (September), Meskel (True Cross) at Addis and Gondar
Practical information
Safe in tourist areas: Addis, the northern historic route, Omo, Danakil with a scout. Caution: avoid Tigray, tense since the 2020-2022 conflict, as well as the Eritrean and Sudanese borders. A mandatory e-visa must be obtained online before departure. Yellow fever vaccine required when arriving from an endemic country, antimalarials essential in Omo and Danakil. Avoid tap water. Cards accepted in tourist hotels and Addis, cash elsewhere. The Ethiopian calendar runs 7-8 years behind the Gregorian one, and clock hours follow a different count. Tipping: $5-$10 a day for guides and drivers, 200-300 birrs for Omo villages.
Frequently asked questions
When?
October to March is the best general period (dry season, pleasant temperatures of 18 to 28 °C in altitude). November-February is the tourist peak, with major cultural festivals: Meskel (September 27), Genna, Ethiopian Christmas (January 7), and Timkat, orthodox epiphany (January 19), which draws a million pilgrims to Gondar. For the Omo Valley, favor September-November: dry season, practicable tracks (Hamer bull-jumping ceremonies happen March to October depending on the village). For the Danakil, aim for November-February: temperatures stay 'bearable' (35-45 °C) versus a dangerous 50-60 °C in summer. Avoid June-September, the kremt rainy season: muddy trails, frequent fog in the Simien.
How long?
Allow 12 days for the Northern historic route alone (Addis Ababa, Lake Tana and its monasteries, Gondar and its UNESCO castles, Simien Mountains, Aksum, Lalibela), the itinerary most chosen by my travelers for a first cultural discovery. Add the Omo Valley and its 8 tribes (5 to 7 days by 4x4 from Addis) and count 14 to 16 days total, or 10 days if you focus solely on the Omo. For the grand complete circuit combining the historic North, the Danakil Depression (4 days, Erta Ale and Dallol) and the Omo Valley (5 days), plan 18 to 21 days: a physically demanding itinerary (Danakil heat, Simien altitude, Omo tracks), reserved for adventurous travelers or those returning to Ethiopia.
Budget?
Three levels, excluding international flights, for 2 people: Comfort from €4,200/person for 12 days (11 nights in 3★ hotels, standard Sheraton in Addis, Maribela in Lalibela, Goha in Gondar, Sabean in Aksum, Simien Lodge, Ethiopian Airlines domestic flights, Northern historic route included); Premium from €6,800/person for 14-16 days (13-15 nights in 4-5★ hotels such as the Sheraton Addis, the Mountain View Hotel in Lalibela with a plunging view over the churches, premium Simien Lodge, Buska Lodge in the Omo, Omo Valley 5 days included); Exclusive from €11,000/person for 18-21 days combining all major sites, including the Danakil (4 days, Erta Ale lava lake) and the Omo (5 days), with a Sheraton suite and Cessna charter flights for the most remote connections. Expect €700 to €1,100 per person for a round-trip Paris-Addis Ababa flight.
Visa?
An e-visa is MANDATORY for EU, UK, US, and Canadian nationals, to be requested online before departure on the official evisa.gov.et site ($52, valid 30 days, 24-72 h processing, print the confirmation). The yellow fever vaccine is required if you arrive from a country where the disease is endemic (international vaccination booklet to present on arrival); otherwise it isn't mandatory but remains recommended as a precaution. Antimalarial treatment, however, is essential for the Omo Valley and the Danakil, both risk zones.
Tigray and borders security?
Ethiopia is safe in the usual tourist areas: Addis Ababa, the Northern historic route (Lalibela, Aksum, Gondar, Simien), the Omo Valley, and the Danakil (always accompanied by an armed scout, mandatory under local regulations, for nighttime hyena protection in the Simien and for security near the Eritrean border in the Danakil). Tigray (which includes Aksum on some itineraries) remains in a variable situation since the 2020-2022 conflict: I systematically verify conditions before confirming a route through this region, and adapt the itinerary if needed. The Eritrea and Sudan borders are to be strictly AVOIDED. Across the rest of the country, the main risk is health-related (malaria in the Omo and Danakil, tap water to avoid everywhere) rather than security-related.
Family?
Lalibela, Gondar, Simien from age 12. Omo Valley from age 14 (difficult tracks, cultural sensitivity). Danakil from age 18 (extreme heat).
How to get around?
Ethiopian Airlines domestic flights are essential to quickly reach the major stops: a 4★ Skytrax airline, one of Africa's best, serving 130 destinations including almost all the Ethiopian cities on the circuit (expect $100 to $200 per segment). A Land Cruiser 4×4 with an English-speaking driver is essential for the Simien Mountains (mountain tracks) and the Omo Valley (very difficult tracks, sometimes impassable in rainy season). Main roads between major cities are paved but long: Addis-Bahir Dar is 580 km and about 9 h of driving, Bahir Dar-Gondar 180 km and 3 h. Individual car rental isn't recommended outside major cities, a local driver who knows the tracks and checkpoints is far preferable.
Omo visits: ethical?
Yes, supervised (direct payment to villages, no photos without agreement). My partners respect communities.
Combine?
Yes: Ethiopia + Djibouti (Red Sea), Ethiopia + Kenya (Lake Turkana), Ethiopia + Uganda, Ethiopia + Tanzania.
Tips?
$5-$10/day for guides and drivers. 200-300 birrs (~€3) to Omo villages. 5-10 birrs/photo (consented).
How to pay in Ethiopia?
Bank cards are accepted in tourist hotels and in Addis Ababa, but cash remains essential everywhere else (Ethiopian birr, ETB, around 130 to 1 EUR). US dollars (USD) are widely accepted and even preferred for certain expenses such as site entrance fees or tips. Bring enough cash before leaving Addis Ababa, as ATMs are scarce in remote regions like the Simien, the Omo, or the Danakil. Tips (5-10 USD a day for guides and drivers, 200-300 birrs for village visits in the Omo) are settled in cash only.
What should I pack for Ethiopia?
Power outlets are Type C/E/F, 220 V, same as France: no special adapter needed. Pack layered clothing, mornings and evenings are cool in altitude (Lalibela, Gondar, Simien, 10-25 °C), warmer during the day in the lowlands. For a Simien trek, bring warm clothes (altitude nights can approach 0 °C) and sturdy walking shoes. For the Danakil, pack light, loose clothing, a hat, and sun protection, as temperatures climb to 35-50 °C there, one of the hottest places on Earth. Modest dress is required to visit Lalibela's churches and attend the orthodox mass (shoulders and legs covered, headscarf for women). Antimalarial treatment is essential for the Omo and the Danakil, and always keep bottled water on hand.
