Custom travel to Eswatini

Eswatini, formerly Swaziland until King Mswati III decreed the name change in April 2018 ('Eswatini' means 'land of the Swazi' in siSwati), is one of Africa's smallest countries: 17,364 km² for 1.2 million inhabitants, 13-15 h of flight with stopover from Paris via Johannesburg. Independent since 1968, it is also one of the world's last absolute monarchies. Mswati III, enthroned in 1986 at age 18, succeeded his father Sobhuza II, whose 82-year reign (1899-1982) remains one of Africa's longest. Encircled between South Africa and Mozambique, this small mountainous kingdom has deeply preserved its Swazi culture. Two royal ceremonies anchor national life: Umhlanga, the late-August reed dance, gathers 30,000 young girls at the royal palace for the queen-mother and remains one of Africa's largest living traditional ceremonies; Incwala, in December-January, is the sacred royal purification ceremony, closed to foreigners on sacred days. On the wildlife side, Hlane Royal National Park (220 km²) shelters reintroduced lions and white rhinos; Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, opened in 1963, was one of Africa's earliest parks; and Mkhaya Game Reserve protects some of the last black rhinos. Landscapes also impress, with the Ezulwini Valley — the 'Sky Valley' between Mbabane and Manzini — Sibebe Rock, the world's 2nd largest monolith after Uluru, formed of 3-billion-year-old granite, and the 1,800 km of Malolotja trails. Plan 5-7 days as a Kruger extension or 8-10 days to explore the country in depth.
