Custom travel to Eswatini

Eswatini, formerly Swaziland until King Mswati III decreed the name change in April 2018 ('Eswatini' means 'land of the Swazi' in siSwati), is one of Africa's smallest countries: 17,364 km² for 1.2 million inhabitants, 13-15 h flight via Johannesburg from Paris. Independent since 1968, it is also one of the world's last absolute monarchies. Mswati III, enthroned in 1986 aged eighteen, succeeded his father Sobhuza II, whose eighty-two-year reign (1899-1982) remains one of Africa's longest. Encircled between South Africa and Mozambique, this small mountainous kingdom has deeply preserved its Swazi culture. Two royal ceremonies anchor national life: Umhlanga, the late-August reed dance, gathers 30,000 young girls at the royal palace for the queen-mother; Incwala, in December-January, is the sacred royal purification ceremony. Wildlife-wise, Hlane Royal National Park shelters reintroduced lions and white rhinos; Mkhaya Game Reserve protects some of the last black rhinos; Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary (1963) was one of Africa's earliest parks. Landscapes: the Ezulwini Valley — the 'Sky Valley' — Sibebe Rock, the world's 2nd largest monolith after Uluru, and the 1,800 km of Malolotja trails. Plan five to seven days as a Kruger extension or eight to ten days to explore the country in depth.
