Custom travel to Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic (48,671 km², 11 million inhabitants, independent from Haiti since 1844) is the Caribbean's second-largest island — it shares Hispaniola with Haiti. Its major UNESCO site remains the Santo Domingo Colonial Zone (UNESCO 1990), founded on August 5, 1496 by Bartolomeo Columbus: the Americas' first permanent European city and the continent's oldest capital, housing the Primada de América Cathedral (1512-1540), Alcázar de Colón (1510), Ozama Fortress (1502, the Americas' oldest European fortress), and Calle Las Damas. At Punta Cana, Bávaro beach (32 km of fine white sand) is regularly ranked World Top 10, and Casa de Campo houses the Pete Dye Teeth of the Dog golf course (1971). From January to March, 2,000 humpback whales reach Samaná Bay from the North Atlantic — one of the world's best spots to observe them. In the center, Duarte Peak (3,098 m) is the Caribbean's highest summit. Creole cuisine (la bandera, mangú, sancocho), Brugal, Barceló, and Bermúdez rums, merengue (UNESCO 2016), and bachata. Allow seven to twelve days to combine UNESCO Santo Domingo, Samaná, and Punta Cana — an ideal destination also paired with Cuba or Puerto Rico.

When to go

The Dominican Republic can be visited almost year-round, but with a clearly superior season: November to April (dry season, 24-30 °C temperatures, low humidity, little rain). For Samaná humpback whales, strictly January-March (peak February 15-March 15). For Duarte Peak, December-March (passable trail). The La Vega Carnival, one of the Caribbean's most colorful, takes place every Sunday in February. To avoid: June to October (Atlantic hurricane season, peak September — some resorts close August-September, cheaper flights but cyclone risk). Stable water temperature around 26-28 °C year-round. Tourist high season corresponds to end-of-year holidays and February-March.

  • Peak dry season (December – April) — Samaná whales (Jan-March), La Vega Carnival February
  • Spring (May) — Punta Cana, Casa de Campo, golf
  • Rainy season (June – October) — Cheaper flights but cyclone risk
  • Autumn (November) — Beaches, Santo Domingo, golf season start
