Custom travel to Chile
Chile is one of South America's most singular destinations: a ribbon country 4,300 km long and 180 km wide, between the Pacific and the Andes. This spine offers rare variety: the Atacama in the north, the world's driest desert with its El Tatio geysers and world-class observatories; Torres del Paine and its 2,850 m granite towers; Easter Island and its 887 moais, 5 hours by air from Santiago; the Colchagua Valley, « Chile's Bordeaux »; Valparaíso, the port beloved of Neruda; and Chiloé, with its UNESCO-listed wooden churches. Allow 14 to 21 days to combine Atacama, Patagonia and Easter Island: a fundamental destination for lovers of extreme landscapes and astronomy.
Highlights
- Atacama Desert (world's most arid, observatories)

Cards accepted everywhere in hotels and restaurants. Spanish omnipresent (limited English outside tourist hotels). Frequently asked questions
When?
October-April, the austral summer, is the best overall period. In Patagonia, aim for November-March (10-20 °C, long 16-18 h days, but a December-February tourist peak): avoid June-August, austral winter, when lodges close and some trails become impassable, unless you're going specifically for the puma safari, which peaks between May and October. Atacama can be visited year-round thanks to its dry, stable climate, with a slight tourist peak from November to March. Easter Island suits an October-to-April trip, with warmer waters for snorkeling and the Tapati Rapa Nui festival in February. For the Colchagua vineyards, prefer March-May, harvest season with pleasant temperatures.
How long?
12 days for essential Chile: Santiago (2 nights), Atacama (4 nights, desert and observatories), Torres del Paine in Patagonia (4 nights, trekking and Grey glacier), plus Valparaíso. 14 days to add Easter Island (4 nights on-site, needed to cover all moai sites). 21 days for the complete version, which also includes the Colchagua Valley vineyards (3 nights), a deeper Atacama stay (5 nights for all excursions), and 5 nights in Patagonia allowing the full 4-day W trek. Since Chile is a 4,300-km ribbon country, each stage requires a domestic flight, which explains these longer durations compared to a compact destination.
Budget?
€4,800-€6,500 per person for 12 days in our Comfort tier (excluding international flights): 4★ hotels in Santiago, Atacama, and Torres del Paine, LATAM/Sky domestic flights included, Atacama and Patagonia excursions. In Premium, €9,500-€13,000 for 14 days in upscale all-inclusive lodges (W Santiago, Tierra Atacama, Tierra Patagonia), with unlimited excursions. In Exclusive, from €16,500 for 18-21 days at Relais & Châteaux addresses (Awasi Atacama and Patagonia with private guide, Explora Rapa Nui on Easter Island). Expect €1,100-€1,600 per person for a Paris-Santiago round-trip flight with a stopover, Chile ranking among the world's most expensive destinations on the premium lodge segment.
Visa?
No visa for French citizens (90-day stay, passport valid 6 months).
Chile safety?
One of Latin America's safest countries, with a crime rate comparable to Europe's. Stay alert to pickpockets in downtown Santiago and avoid venturing alone into some peripheral Valparaíso 'cerros' after dark. No vaccine is mandatory, and antimalarials aren't needed, as the country is malaria-free. Tap water should be avoided in the north, particularly in Atacama, where bottled water is preferable. In lodges and tourist hotels, card payments and Spanish-speaking private transfers keep the whole stay secure.
Family?
Ideal for families (Atacama landscapes, Patagonia moderate excursions). Torres del Paine W trek from age 14 (4 sustained days). Easter Island all ages.
How to get around?
LATAM domestic flights are ESSENTIAL: the country stretches 4,300 km north to south, with Santiago-Calama (Atacama) in 2 h, Santiago-Punta Arenas (Patagonia) in 3 h, and Santiago-Easter Island in 5 h. On the ground, a 4×4 with a Spanish-speaking driver is provided in Santiago, Atacama, and Patagonia for all excursions. Self-drive car rental isn't recommended outside major cities: the central valley's main roads are paved, but some Atacama and Patagonia tracks remain gravel.
Easter Island: how many days?
Minimum 4 nights to visit 13 major sites (Tongariki sunrise, Rano Raraku quarry, Akivi, Anakena beach, Rano Kau Orongo).
Combine?
Yes: Chile + Argentina (Patagonia El Calafate Perito Moreno, Buenos Aires), Chile + Bolivia (Uyuni Salt Flat 200 km Atacama), Chile + Peru (Cusco).
Tips?
10% in restaurants (often included). $5-$10/day for guides and drivers.
Can I pay by card, or do I need cash?
Cards are accepted everywhere in hotels and restaurants, including Atacama and Patagonia all-inclusive lodges. Still, carry some Chilean pesos or US dollars in cash for small expenses, local markets, and tips for guides and drivers ($5-$10/day). The Chilean peso (CLP) trades at roughly 1 EUR ≈ 1,050 CLP, and there's usually no need to exchange money before departure, as ATMs are reliable in Santiago and major cities.
Which region should I choose for a first trip to Chile?
For a first trip, our 12-day 'Essential Chile' itinerary (Santiago, Atacama, Patagonia, plus Valparaíso) remains the most chosen: it combines the world's driest desert and its observatories, the granite towers of Torres del Paine, and the lively capital, without requiring the full 3-week circuit. If world archaeology fascinates you more, adding Easter Island (14 days) lets you discover the 887 moais without sacrificing the mainland essentials.
