Essential Barbados: west coast and Bridgetown
Duration : 7 days
Route : Bridgetown UNESCO (2 nights, capital, garrison) → West coast Holetown-Sandy Lane (4 nights, 5★ Platinum Coast palaces) → Bridgetown (1)
Barbados is one of the Caribbean's most exclusive destinations: a 432-km² island about 10 h from Paris, independent from the UK since 1966 and a republic since 2021, while keeping the English language and culture. The easternmost Caribbean island, tempered by constant trade winds, it offers two contrasting coasts: the Platinum Coast to the west, calm and lined with palaces such as Sandy Lane and Cobblers Cove, and the more spectacular Atlantic coast with Bathsheba's Soup Bowl, a legendary surf spot. Bridgetown, the UNESCO-listed capital, is also the birthplace of rum with Mount Gay, a distillery in operation since 1703, and the stage of the Crop Over Festival in July-August. Allow seven to ten days to combine beaches, golf and a tropical British art of living.

December to May is the best period: dry season, 24 to 28 °C, turquoise sea at 26 °C and refreshing trade winds. Tourist peak from December to February, with prices doubled or tripled and palaces fully booked six to twelve months ahead. March to May remains ideal: fine temperatures, smaller crowds, reasonable prices. July-August is worth it for the Crop Over Festival, one of the Caribbean's largest, higher rates but an exceptional cultural experience, and November for the professional surf championship at the Soup Bowl. Avoid June to October, hurricane season: Barbados, on the eastern edge of the Antilles arc, is less exposed than its neighbors, but the storm risk remains in September-October.
Barbados is one of the Caribbean's safest islands, with crime levels comparable to Europe: only basic caution is needed at night in some Bridgetown districts. No visa for French citizens for stays up to 28 days, extensions possible, and a 12-month Welcome Stamp program exists for remote workers. No mandatory vaccines, no antimalarials, and tap water is safe and of excellent quality. Cards are accepted everywhere and English is spoken throughout. Tipping: 10 to 15% in restaurants, often already included as a service charge, plus a few dollars a day for hotel staff and drivers. Driving is on the left, a British heritage, and renting a car requires a temporary local permit of about 10 USD, a Barbadian particularity.
