Andorra skiing and spa

Route : Toulouse / Barcelona (flight) → Soldeu (3 nights, Grandvalira skiing) → Andorra la Vella (1 night, Caldea spa) → return
Andorra is one of Europe's most singular destinations — a 468 km² co-principality perched at an average 2,000 m altitude in the central Pyrenees, governed since 1278 by two co-princes (the Bishop of Urgell and the President of the French Republic). The country concentrates preserved alpine landscapes, one of the largest Pyrenean ski areas (Grandvalira and Vallnord, 305 km of pistes total), a UNESCO-listed glacial valley (Madriu-Perafita-Claror), exceptional Romanesque heritage, and advantageous taxation making it a shopping paradise. From the Coma Pedrosa summit (2,942 m) to the Caldea thermal baths (southern Europe's largest thermal-leisure spa), Andorra is a parenthesis between Spain and France, ideal for a short but intense stay.

Andorra offers two distinct seasons. Winter (December to March): skiing, the country is in high season, abundant snow (600-1,000 mm), -5 to 5 °C during the day, down to -15 °C at altitude at night. Spring (April-May): off-peak, snowmelt, low hikes still difficult. Summer (June to September): ideal hiking, 15-25 °C during the day, long days, accessible glacial lakes, Madriu Valley in full bloom. Autumn (October-November): transitions, flamboyant colors in October, first snow on summits, progressive closure of high-altitude trails.
Andorra is one of the world's safest countries (almost nonexistent crime). No visa for French citizens but ID card or passport essential (border posts). Andorra is not in the EU — VAT is very low (4.5%), hence tax-free shopping. But beware on French return: €75 tobacco, €110 perfumes, €380 other goods allowed duty-free (otherwise declare). Excellent tap water. Cards accepted everywhere. Tipping 5-10% in restaurants. Right-hand drive, French highway code applies. Mandatory winter chains (check tires).
