Essential Algeria: Algiers, Tipaza, and Kabylie
Duration : 8 days
Route : Algiers (3 nights) → Tipaza (1 night, Roman ruins) → Kabylie: Tizi Ouzou and perched villages (2 nights) → return Algiers (1 night) → return flight
Algeria is Africa's largest country (2,380,000 km²) and one of the least known to the general public — though it preserves one of the most extraordinary heritages in the Mediterranean and Sahara. White Algiers, its UNESCO Casbah, and its 1,200 km of coastline. Tipaza and its Roman ruins by the sea. Berber Kabylie and its perched villages. Algerian Sahara, geographical heart of the desert, unfolds the Tassili n'Ajjer and Hoggar — timeless lunar landscapes, 10,000-year-old prehistoric rock paintings, endless dunes. Little visited by mass tourism, Algeria offers powerful human encounters, refined cuisine, and landscapes found nowhere else.

Algeria offers very different seasons by region. For the Sahara (Tassili, Hoggar): October to April (cool season, mild days 20-25 °C, nights 5-15 °C). Strictly avoid May to September (50 °C+ during the day, dangerous). For Algiers and the coast: March-June and September-October (ideal Mediterranean climate, 20-28 °C). Avoid July-August on the coast (stifling heat, humidity). For Constantine, Timgad, and Djemila: April-June and September-October. For Kabylie: May-October (winter rainy, some passes snow-covered). Ramadan shifts some habits (restaurants closed during the day).
Algeria is generally safe for tourists with an accredited local partner, in northern tourist zones and Sahara with guide. Absolutely avoid: southern border zones (Mali, Niger, Libya) and some far-southeastern zones. Visa mandatory (apply at French consulate with official invitation from your Algerian partner, around €110, 3-week delay). Money: prefer euros or dollars to exchange locally (parallel rate 50% more advantageous than official). Cards accepted only in major hotels. Avoid tap water (bottled water). Photos: forbidden in military and border zones (signage everywhere). Modest dress recommended (shoulders and knees covered), particularly outside Algiers. Women traveling alone are welcomed without difficulties but dress modestly.
For the Sahara (Tassili, Hoggar): October to April (cool season, mild days, cold nights). Absolutely avoid May-September (50 °C+, dangerous). For Algiers and the coast: March-June and September-October. For Constantine and the Roman east: April-June or September-October.
Minimum 8 days for Algiers + Tipaza + Kabylie. 12 days to add Tassili n'Ajjer. 16 days for the grand tour including Constantine, Timgad/Djemila, and the Sahara.
As a guideline, €2,200-€3,200 per person for 8-12 days in comfort, excluding flights. For an upscale trip with luxury bivouac: €4,500-€9,500. Paris-Algiers flights: €250-€450.
Yes, visa mandatory at the Algerian consulate (around €110, 3-week delay). Essential: official invitation from your Algerian partner (which I obtain for you). Passport valid 6 months after return.
Generally safe in northern tourist zones (Algiers, Kabylie, Constantine, Roman east) and Sahara accompanied by experienced local guides. Avoid: southern border zones (Mali, Niger, Libya), far southeast. My Algerian partner and Tuareg guides guarantee total safety.
Private car with driver recommended for the north (coast, Kabylie, Constantine). 4×4 mandatory with Tuareg guide for the Sahara. Domestic flights (Algiers-Djanet 2 h, Algiers-Tamanrasset 2 h 30) to reach the South. Avoid long-distance buses.
Moderate level. Expeditions combine 4×4 (1-2 h/day) and walking (5-15 km/day, 6-8 h, elevation 200-500 m). No technical difficulty but good fitness required. Bivouac in Tuareg tent or under the stars, nights sometimes cool (5-10 °C). Recommended from age 12.
Very widely, yes — complex colonial heritage but French remains the language of higher education, administration, and culture. Almost all Algerians in cities speak fluent French. In the countryside and with Tuaregs, Arabic or Tamazight predominate (guides speak French).
Not at all — Algeria welcomes all travelers without distinction. During Ramadan, some restaurants close during the day but hotels stay open (and bring room service trays). Modest dress recommended (shoulders and knees covered) particularly outside Algiers.
From age 12 for Tassili (physical effort). Younger (8 years+) for Algiers, the coast, and Kabylie which are accessible. Total safety in tourist zones, warm welcome for children, comfortable family hotels.
